Travel Plans
A travel plan is a simple business strategy for managing the travel generated by your organisation, with the specific aim of reducing its environmental impact.
They typically combine measures to support walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing and are reinforced with promotion and incentives along with the management of workplace parking. In order to undertake a virtual journey through the creation of a travel plan, click here.

There are a number of reasons why a travel plan might be developed. It may be necessary in order to secure planning permission for a new development. Alternatively, an organisation might be committed to promoting a greener corporate image or improving access to its premises for existing / potential staff.
In addition to assisting you to possibly create your own travel plan, it is our ambition to create an Area Travel Plan for the whole of the Team Valley community.
What is an Area Travel Plan?
An Area Travel Plan is a package of measures, which aims to promote sustainable travel amongst a group of organisations. The main aim of creating a Team Valley Area Travel Plan is to reduce the reliance on the private car and promote environmentally friendly alternatives, or indeed, reduce the need to travel at all. The benefits to you, as an employer could be to:
- Business Travel: The costs (and other impacts) of business travel can be significantly reduced, either as a consequence of encouraging business trips to be made by more sustainable means or by reducing the requirement for business travel altogether.
- Logistical Improvements: Reductions in delays and congestion as a consequence of employees making smarter, more informed, travel choices can improve logistical operations for businesses, with improved reliability of inbound/outbound deliveries.
- Cost Savings: While the above will result in significant cost savings to your business, the Area Travel Plan approach itself can also help you save money. The joined up approach to delivering improvements, advocated by the Area Travel Plan, will be beneficial to your company.
- Benefits for the Local Community and Environment: It is well recognised that vehicle emissions, congestion and delay have many implications in terms of the environment and local communities. People who live and work in areas with heavy congestion can suffer from an increased risk of health problems. Heavy traffic can also impact on road safety, and can increase noise and dust pollution.
- Reducing Carbon Emissions: A reduction in the number of car trips to and from Team Valley would lessen negative environmental impacts, improving air quality and contributing to reducing local carbon emissions.
- Encouraging Economic Growth: Improving accessibility and reducing congestion around Team Valley will have the benefit of encouraging inward investment and economic growth. The pool of potential employees will also be widened as a consequence.
