Car Sharing
Car Sharing is where two or more people share a car for the journey to work. Car share arrangements can work in a variety of ways. Typically, sharers divide the cost of petrol between the number of people in the vehicle, or drive on alternate days. However this is done, the government have confirmed that contributions towards petrol can be given, provided the trip is not made for hire or reward.
How can I promote Car Sharing?
TeamValleylinks.com has a scheme set up to allow anyone with an email address to arrange shares for their journey to work, visit Team Valley Car Share. More people registered to use this service means more matches found by the system, so by encouraging staff to register and use the system you can support car sharing across Team Valley. The Team Valley Car Share shceme is provided by Share Smarter.
You could consider holding a "roadshow" event during lunchtime to encourage people to sign up; the Travel Plan Co-ordinator can provide additional support for such an event. If you would like more information, please contact the Travel Plan Coordinator.
To encourage staff to car share, many companies provide dedicated parking spaces for people who share their car on the journey to work. Where there is a shortage of spaces, this can be a good incentive to encourage sharing.
A further incentive to encourage sharing is to provide a guaranteed taxi ride home to registered car sharers in an emergency. Evidence suggests this service is rarely used, but is important to encourage people to leave their cars at home.
